about us

Hey there!

We are Daniel and Monica, a duo of fashion enthusiasts who embarked on a journey to explore the limits of male neckwear and turn these often overlooked garments into pieces of functional art. Based in a small studio in Edinburgh, we research, design and handcraft each individual piece.

Design Philosophy

Since Cataclistum’s inception we have been guided by our desire to create garments kept only for special occasions.

This mindset allows us to stretch our creativity, set aside established conventions, and seek the highest quality materials to create something special, daring, and sometimes even a bit strange.

Driven by our passion for meticulous craftsmanship, we take no shortcuts and put as much time and effort into our multi-layered methods as is needed to create unique pieces that cannot be found anywhere else.

Our Approach

As an independent studio that produces only a few tailored products a year, we are lucky to have all the creative freedom in the world.

This is why our collections don’t have an overarching theme. We approach each of the designs we make as an individual art piece. There is, however, a general process we follow…

It all starts with inspiration. This can come from a book we enjoyed recently, an art movement we are fans of, a piece of architecture, a specific artisan skill we would like to master, or just a feeling we would like to share. We then continue to meticulously research the object of our fascination, which can take weeks or months.

If we feel like our idea could benefit from a collaboration with an artist, this is when we would bring them on board.

We then take our time to prototype. This is usually the lengthiest stage, as we want to make sure we are fully satisfied with the final result.

Once we are happy with the prototype we begin to work with our silk-weaving partners on the technical and aesthetical details of each fabric. The process is completed when we bring all of the pieces together and handcraft a tailor-made and unique piece, just for you.

Materials

Because of our genuine interest in creating memorable tactile experiences, we work with various unconventional materials and welcome the challenges that come with every one of them.

Silk

Natural protein fibre woven into complex designs, forming an incredibly soft fabric with an unparalleled sheen.

Titanium

Lightweight, skin friendly, able to withstand extreme temperatures and famously difficult to work with.

Bronze

A metal alloy that brings a sense of warmth into every piece it forms.

Porcelain

Extremely hard, fired at 1,400 °C and a delight to handle.

We want to make sure that you indulge in a genuine Cataclistum product. For this reason we only sell our neckties through this website.

Our ties are always tailored to your exact measurements and are individually numbered.

Each tie also comes with a certificate of authenticity that can be cross-checked with our register.
